History:
The The Evangelical Church of India was founded
by the Oriental Missionary Society, OMS International.
Mr.Charles E.Cowman
and Mr.E.Kibourne, the
founders commenced OMS ministry in
The first
national Church was planted in 1952. The OMS Field
Executive Committee was in charge of the Church administration through their
national and missionary leaders till 1967-’68. The
constitutional amendments of 1969-’70 made Evangelical Church of India (ECI),
fully autonomous.
Dr.M.Ezra Sargunam
was elected first bishop and was consecrated in 1993.
The Church has today 1200 congregations throughout
Administration: The All India Conference (AIC) is the supreme body of the ECI. All officers of the AIC are elected. The Bishop is the executive head of the Church. He is the Chairman of AIC executive which consists of the President, Vice Presidents, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer. The Board of Governors is the governing body of the ECI. The members of the Board of Governors are the office-bearers of the All India Conference. Area Chairman and two laymen are elected by the All India Conference.
The AIC is divided into Area Conferences which are further divided into districts under which local churches are administered by Elders Committees. Under ECI-OMS Board of Theological Education, Madras Theological Seminary and College and Allahabad Bible Seminary are functioning. These two are Serampore affiliated colleges. ECI has eleven other Bible Schools.
